Carbon Reduction Plan

Organisation: MEL

Effective Date: 8 October 2026

Review Frequency: Annually

1. Commitment

MEL recognises that recruitment and staffing activities have an environmental impact through office operations, energy use, business travel, digital infrastructure, procurement, waste and the activities associated with delivering workforce services.

MEL is committed to reducing avoidable greenhouse gas emissions, improving resource efficiency and considering environmental impacts when making operational and purchasing decisions.

This Carbon Reduction Plan sets out MEL's practical approach. It does not claim a particular emissions reduction percentage or net-zero status unless independently measured and formally adopted by MEL.

2. Objectives

  • reduce unnecessary energy consumption;
  • reduce business travel and associated emissions where practical;
  • increase digital working and reduce unnecessary paper use;
  • reduce waste and improve recycling;
  • consider environmental performance when selecting suppliers;
  • measure environmental performance progressively; and
  • continually improve MEL's environmental practices.

3. Scope

This plan applies to MEL's office operations, employees, contractors and relevant suppliers. It also provides principles for considering environmental impacts within recruitment and staffing operations.

4. Carbon Measurement

MEL will seek to establish a reliable operational emissions baseline where sufficient information is available.

Relevant sources may include:

  • electricity and energy consumption;
  • business travel;
  • fuel use where applicable;
  • purchased goods and services;
  • waste;
  • water consumption where relevant; and
  • other material operational emissions.

Where emissions cannot yet be measured reliably, MEL will prioritise establishing appropriate measurement processes rather than publishing unsupported figures.

5. Energy Efficiency

MEL will seek to reduce unnecessary energy use through sensible heating, cooling, lighting and equipment practices.

  • Switch off equipment when not required.
  • Use energy-efficient equipment where reasonably practicable.
  • Avoid unnecessary heating and cooling.
  • Review energy consumption where reliable data is available.

6. Travel

MEL will encourage appropriate use of remote meetings and digital communication where this can replace unnecessary travel without reducing service quality.

Where travel is necessary, employees should consider practical lower-emission options where reasonably available.

7. Digital Working and Paper Reduction

MEL will use digital documentation, electronic communication and electronic record systems where appropriate.

Printing should be limited to documents where a physical copy is necessary for legal, operational, accessibility or client requirements.

8. Waste

MEL will seek to reduce waste through responsible purchasing, reuse, recycling and appropriate disposal.

Confidential recruitment and personal information must always be disposed of securely and in accordance with data protection requirements.

9. Procurement

Where commercially reasonable, MEL will consider environmental factors when selecting office supplies, technology, services and other suppliers.

Environmental considerations will be balanced against quality, cost, security, legal requirements and business needs.

10. Recruitment Operations

Digital candidate registration, interviews, documentation and communication may be used to reduce unnecessary travel and paper consumption while maintaining appropriate compliance and candidate support.

11. Responsibilities

MEL Management is responsible for overseeing this plan. Employees and contractors are expected to follow relevant environmental procedures and avoid unnecessary waste.

12. Monitoring

MEL will review environmental performance periodically and may establish measurable targets as reliable baseline information becomes available.

13. Continuous Improvement

MEL will consider opportunities to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, reduce travel-related emissions and improve environmental procurement practices.

14. Review

This plan will be reviewed at least annually and updated when operational circumstances, available emissions data or relevant environmental expectations change.
